By the way, the purple dress they designed for Joan when she went to work for Bonwit Teller is truly a beautiful piece. We have a pair of vintage 50's Bonwit Teller black and white leather spiked heels for sale in our boutique and they are positively divine. They look practically brand new which is a true testament to the superior quality with which items were made in days gone by. Oh how I long for that to return in our now disposable culture.

Vintage Gunne Sax and John Taylor Hot Pants

Okay. I admit it. I'm an 80's child through and through. Mind you, it's not my favorite decade of all time, but I came of age in the 80's so it holds a fond place in my heart. The 80's were great for many things. Whether or not fashion was one of them is truly debatable. I've been in many a passionate discussion over 80's fashion and I've discovered that people generally either hate it or really, really hate it.

I must be completely whacko because I don't hate it at all. Well except for the 2 styles of shoulder pads; huge and King Kong size. Someone along the way decided all of us women should strive to look as much like an upside down triangle as humanly possible. Don't get me wrong, I understand the reasoning for it, given the times. More women than ever before were entering the workforce and competing with men for high profile jobs. The idea was to make women appear more formidable in a man's world. Allright, allright. I support the idea but hated the execution.

Aside from the massive tumor-like shoulder pads, there was a lot to like about 80's fashion. After all, it was the decade that brought us Duran Duran. The undisputed Gods of fashion and style in the 80's still wow me with their early decade New Romantic/Pirate look. No joke. That took guts. John Taylor had a thing for dressing like a shower conscious, leather clad Captain Jack Sparrow. Well they all did to be truthful. But when I'm feeling a little nostalgic, I Google John Taylor in pirate boots and hot pants. Since he married Juicy Couture co-founder Gela Nash, I'm reasonably certain we will never see him being that fashionably...ahem...adventerous again.

There is, however, one designer who foils the hardcore 80's fashion hater time and again. Jessica McClintock's timeless romantic and sometimes avant garde style tends to be the great equalizer. I've been able to find common ground here which must be a true testament to the Gunne Sax label and their approach to design and feminine appeal. Recently I was fortunate enough to come across six vintage 80's JMC/Gunne Sax dresses and one vintage 70's Gunne Sax blouse for my boutique and I'm thrilled. I don't stock a lot of vintage 80's clothing but I never turn down vintage 70's or 80's Gunne Sax. If I could squeeze my 39 year old butt into the pink one, I'd wear it to the grocery store in a New York minute. You know, just because I could. You can view the collection here.

Grandma's Lush Black Magic Cake Recipe

I don't know how far back this recipe stretches in our family. What I do know is that my Grandmother made this cake for everyone's birthday for as long as I can remember. She was an avid baker and her cakes and pies were some of the best I've ever had. This particular cake is positively divine, surprisingly easy to make and my favorite chocolate cake recipe of all time.

I'm making it today for my husband's birthday (it's his favorite too!) so I thought I'd share it with my friends here. If you decide to give it a try, drop me a line and let me know how you like it. Also feel free to email me with any questions as well.

Grandma's Black Magic Cake

Ingredients:

1 3/4 C. Flour

2 C. Sugar

3/4 C. Cocoa

2 tsp. Baking Soda

1 tsp. Baking Powder

1 tsp. Salt

2 Eggs

1/2 C. Vegetable Oil

1 tsp. Vanilla

1 C. of Brewed Black Coffee (OR 1 C. of Instant Coffee made with 2 tsp. of Coffee Granules and 1 C. of boiling water)

1 C. Buttermilk (if you don't have buttermilk on hand, you can make sour milk by adding 1TBSP. of vinegar to 1 C. of milk.-- I use the sour milk every time I make this)

Combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Add eggs, coffee, butter/sour milk, oil and vanilla. Beat mixture at medium speed for 2 minutes. Batter will be thin (see photo)

Pour batter into a greased and floured pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes for oblong or bundt pans (I typically use a bundt pan) and 30-35 minutes for layer pans.

Test for doneness with a cake tester and remove cake from oven when tester comes out clean. Remove from oven and allow pan to cool for 15 minutes on wire rack then turn cake out on to wire rack to finish cooling.

Ice cake with your favorite icing or leave it plain. It's just as yummy without any icing.

Enjoy!

The 1920's On Display In Lace and Textile Museum

The Lacis Museum in Berkeley, California is currently running an exhibit titled "Night and Day, The World of the Twenties". On display are textiles and clothing from the Roaring 20's, when women started to trade traditional and restrictive forms of dress for free flowing hair or cute flapper bobs, loose fitting garmets and embellishments that mirrored the art movements of the time. A new freedom of expression for women had taken shape and it is reflected in the fashion of this transformative era.

The exhibit runs until September 1, 2010 and admission is free. If you are in the Berkeley area and happen to visit the exhibit, send us a little note! Wish we could go but being East-Coasters makes it a bit difficult. Alas, we'll have to settle on drooling over the slideshow. Which is gorgeous.

Mad Men Style Goes Mainstream

WWD reports that "Mad Men" costume designer Janie Bryant is launching her own line. Called Mod, the line will be sold on QVC starting September 29, but some items will be available on QVC's website next month. The first collection will include 20 pieces from outerwear to bottoms, a handbag and about 15 pieces of jewelry, all priced between $26 to $138 retail.

This is a great way for vintage to expand into the mainstream even more. With sizes that are readily available for all. Looking forward to seeing the line.

Sarah looks very film noir in the photos she sent donning 2 hats she recently purchased from us. The vintage flapper cloche hat with the filigree buckle was honestly one of my favorite hats and it was difficult sending her to a new home! I can think of few other quotes that would better sum up the legacy of this wonderful human being. His life, tragically cut short, still enthralls and inspires generation after generation. What he accomplished in his life was astounding, despite a desperately poor childhood, loss of his mother at a young age and no formal education to speak of.

He was a thinker and a self-starter, always striving for self-improvement. Truly humble and incredibly intelligent. A fierce defender of liberty for all human beings, an incomparable patriot and an incorruptible statesman. Physically strong and emotionally acute. Loving father and husband, joke teller, aspiring poet and keen orator. He was honest, forthright and eternally honorable. The fact of the matter is, I could never describe President Lincoln in sufficient enough words here. To say that I hold him in the highest regard would be a gross understatement as few men have been greater, in my humble opinion.

The History Channel has a mini site dedicated to President Lincoln. On that site you can "Give a Lincoln for Lincoln" to help preserve President Lincoln's legacy.

There's also a link to sign up for a National Teach-in on Lincoln. This is a live webcast that is sponsored by The History Channel together with the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. This will take place at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. today at 1:30 PM, EST. If you miss it...no worries. It will be available to view on The History Channel (on-demand) starting tomorrow.

I, for one, am very much looking forward to watching a new special on The History Channel on Monday night titled, "Stealing Lincoln's Body", in which The History Channel brings back to life the President with computer graphics. The United States Postal Service has just released a new set of commemorative stamps that chronicle President Lincoln's life. I think they're very well done and will definitely be purchasing a sheet.

This is my friend Louise. Although we only met several months ago, and have never been face to face because Louise lives in the U.K. and I live in the states, she has become a very dear friend. Louise and I met online through The eVintage Society, and we quickly discovered that in addition to a love of vintage pretties, we also both love flappers and Bette Davis and have similar wicked senses of humor.

Louise's store is Catwalk Creative and it's simply divine. I'm going to be featuring her store here on the blog in the coming weeks, but why not go have a look now? Louise has uncomparable taste and is an extremely knowledgeable seller. On a personal note, she's a real sweetie. I'm privaleged to know her.

I'm a sucker for old photos. I've been collecting vintage photos for many years and while I don't have a huge collection, I absolutely love what I have. I have framed photos of unknown people, children, babies and animals hanging in my home. While many find it odd that I do this (and perhaps it is) I find the photos intriguing, incredibly artful and they make me smile. Thankfully I have an understanding hubby and daughter who don't mind their "extended family" watching over them! :o)

So, the other day I was cruising around The Vintage Village and stumbled upon Bullbone's Vintage Photos & Ephemera and fell in love. Even better, Bullbone is also a seller on Etsy. Yay! I simply had to have a look around this shop. And boy did I ever. I looked through all 180 photos currently for sale and favorited a ton. The photos are beautiful, reasonably priced, come with an additional hi-resolution scan and are shipped free to anywhere in the world. I also get a kick out of the cute descriptions. Bullbone's creates little "stories" about the people or animals in the photos and they're fun to read.

Manhatten Vintage Clothing Show

The Manhatten Vintage Clothing & Antique Textile Show is being held at the Metropolitan Pavillion on Friday, February 6th and Saturday February 7th.

I've never attended one of these shows and I'm definitely going to make every attempt to attend the Saturday, February 7th show. Manhatten is a 2.5 hour drive from where I live, so I'm fortunate to live close enough to go. No matter how many times I've been there, I can't find my way around The Big Apple if my life depended on it. So my hubs will have to be my tour guide...I'm sure he's thrilled. Hehe.

There will be another one held on April 24 & 25, so if I miss this one for whatever reason, I will NOT be missing that one! I have a feeling I'm going to walk in and immediately pass out. I wonder if they let you take photos? I probably won't be able to afford even a bottled water there so I hope they'll allow some photography.

Oh sweet merciful Christ...look what's coming to auction on Ebay soon. 'Big Bopper's' son auctioning Dad's casket'. (click link to news article)

I think my favorite tidbit of info from that article was this; "Inside, forensic examiners found the Big Bopper's well-preserved corpse, dressed in a black suit and a blue-and-gray striped tie. He wore socks, but no shoes. Most remarkably, his thick brown hair was still perfectly coiffed in his familiar, 1950s flat-top."

Ummm...I could've happily lived out the rest of my days without ever having that image in my mind. Now it's there. Thanks, dude.

Flapper Obsession

I am obsessed with flappers. I admit it and I know I need help. But I ask you...what's an addict to do when loved ones feed the addiction?

I received this book as a Christmas gift from my hubby and nearly hit the ceiling when I opened it! I can't wait to read it even though I'm in the process of reading 2 other books (I have a hard time committing).

How can you not love a flapper? I mean, the clothing, the hair, not to mention the barrier breaking mentality that helped to pave the way for modern women. I want to look exactly like that woman in the polka dotted dress on the book cover and do crazy dances. I'll smoke a cigarette in a rhinestone studded cigarette holder while telling some rude gentleman (in a tiny Betty Boop voice) "Say...listen here buster!". (For the record...a French flapper would give me a heart attack because I'm a Francophile as well.)

I know my thoughts are probably very romanticized which is why I'm thankful to have a book to reference. I'm excited to learn more and will let you all know how the book is (and how off the mark I was) once I'm finished with it.

Thanks for letting me ramble on about my obsession. Anyone out there love flappers, women or looks from a different era? I'd love to hear about it!

The "Ummm...ewwww" Collectible Of The Year Award

Are you into collectibles? I am, to a point. Certain things like vintage hats, handbags and jewelry are a passion for me.

But I think I have to draw the line at mucus. Yes...that's right, I said mucus. You know, the stuff you excrete from your body when you're sick. But maybe that's just me. I don't think I'd try selling anything spattered with spooge either, no matter who I'd be giving the profit to. Sorry...that's just gross.

Apparently, nobody told actress Scarlett Johansson that doing so is just plain disgusting. Not to mention the fact that she would have to think an awful lot of herself to actually do this. She had to truly believe that her snot would actually sell. Read the whole story HERE.

Lo and behold, someone actually bought this crummy Kleenex. I for one wonder why she didn't just donate money to the charity anonymously instead of doing this stunt. It makes me gag just thinking about it. Is it just me?

Omigosh...this 1932 "Our Gang" (aka "The Little Rascals") clip is one of the cutest I've ever seen! Featuring Stymie, a very young Spanky and of course Petey the Dog. This is titled "The Pooch" and is only 3:24 of a 20 minute feature but boy would I love to see the entire episode! I was rolling with Stymie and the doughnut!

Can We Survive The Shopocalypse?

So, I was surfin' around the web today and stumbled across this new documentary called, "What Would Jesus Buy?".

Now, I could very well be WAYYY behind the curve having only just discovered this movie exists. If I am...my sincerest apologies and you need not read any further!

For those of you in the same boat as me, here are 2 tidbits of info that may make you want to see it:

Premise: The commercialization of Christmas

Granted, I haven't seen this documentary yet but isn't the subject matter long overdue? I believe so! Can I speak for how good the movie is? No. But any film that shines a negative light on Wal-Mart and Disney and the utterly despicable, greedy nature of some people at this time of year gets an automatic "A" from me, sight unseen. One thing is clear from what I've read on the site: In addition to being a statement on consumerism, it's also a satirical take on organized religion and churches. So it might not be for everyone.

I for one can't wait to see it.

80's Music

I love 80's music. I am a true child of the 80's having graduated from high school in 1988. I can't help myself no matter how hard I might try. I just love the sounds of synthesizers and wasn't there a heck of a lot more brass and woodwinds used in those days? I'm a sucker for rock music with a trumpet or saxophone thrown in. Witness the birth of Ska music by watching the video below. Madness was one of many bands developing this sound and it was amazing. "Our House" by Madness still sounds incredible to me.

I was lucky enough to receive a Sirius satellite radio a couple of Christmases ago and the one channel I practically wear out is channel 22, Classic Alternative. This is probably the music that shaped me the most and holds such great memories. They play 80's artists like The Cure, Siouxsie and The Banshees, U2, The Smiths, Madness, The Specials, New Order, Duran Duran, The Eurythmics and on and on. I absolutely love it.

I recall as a child in the 70's, hearing classic Chicago all of the time on the radio. I think that may have helped me develop my love for brass and woodwinds in rock music. In the late 70's Gerry Rafferty made "Baker Street" and it was all over. I was officially hooked. It's one of my, if not my all time, favorite songs.

Did music just get bad or am I just getting old? I remember hearing 50's and 60's music when I was growing up and thinking "Hey...those are oldies! My music will never sound old". Now I hear "my music" in department stores or playing as awful muzak and think, "Hmmm...I guess it has been 25 years, but has it really been 25 years?" Is my generation considered vintage now? I suppose it is but I'm not embarrassed by what I love listening to. It's written on the pages of my life's book and that cannot be changed. Some people have no fondness for the 80's and that's ok. For me, it was a time of some of the best music ever made.

Today I thought I'd write a bit about a site that has become near and dear to my heart. I joined a site called "The Vintage Village" several weeks ago. My initial reason for joining was mainly to commune with other vintage sellers and collectors. I didn't know much about the site and only knew a couple of other sellers who had joined before me. But I figured I'd give it a try, knowing that any opportunity to meet others who share the same passions can never be a bad thing.

Well, I'm here to tell you that this site absolutely ROCKS. Whether you're a vintage seller, collector or just want terrific people to chat with, this site gets an A+++ in all categories.

There's so much to see and it's multi faceted so you can: read recipes, ask for cooking tips, post your own recipes, post your own jokes, read others jokes, search for vintage, easily buy vintage, get to know sellers, chat, blog, be the first to know about vintage sales, ask advice, promote...there's just so many layers of great stuff to see and do!

One of the most important things to me when I'm seeking an online venue to sell, meet others, or just hang out is that the vibe is positive and that I feel welcome. The Vintage Village has such a wonderful feel about it and such a sense of community. I absolutely love it.

I give my heartfelt thanks to Elsie's Attic for not only putting the site together and her fantastic vision for what the site can become, but also for her continued hard work every day to make improvements and bump the site to the next level. On top of all that, she's a sweet, good person who made me feel instantly welcome and a part of things there. In addition, everyone else has been exceedingly helpful and friendly. It's just a great place to hang your proverbial vintage "hat".

Mad Men - 60's Fashion Redux

Dear Fellow Vintage Hearts,

Who would think that proper 60's fashion would be hot again? We've already had a resurgence of hippie style fashion in the late 90's and thankfully, that hasn't really gone away. But traditional and higher fashions from the 60's haven't really caught the eye of fashionistas as viable and hot vintage clothing to wear today. That is until 'Mad Men' came along.

The AMC hit drama show and Golden Globe winner 'Mad Men', has made more traditional 60's fashion sexy and most certainly, coveted. The L.A. Times covered this topic with a November 2 article titled, " 'Mad Men' leads a revival in vintage clothing", and it's a great read. Skinny ties and dashing fedora's for men; wiggle dresses and gorgeous vintage jewelry for women. These are but a few examples of how to incorporate the 'Mad Men' style into your wardrobe.

We love that this vintage fashion has been brought to the forefront by those who recognize it's inherent beauty and are willing to wear it proudly. Consider joining them by adding small pieces to your everyday wear. A vintage necklace or sweater with those jeans...a vintage hat with your skirt and blouse. Before you know it, you'll be wearing full on suits and dresses from this era and we'll be applauding you!

Give it a try! And if you haven't watched the show, it had it's second season finale on October 26. But we're sure that AMC will be running both seasons or at least season 2 over the next month or two. It's great television and if you love fashion, it's pure eye candy!

The Joy Of Vintage

Dear Fellow Vintage Hearts,

We've spent the past couple of days organizing and sorting our inventory. We did this for a couple of reasons. The holidays are coming and we want to bring you the best we have for the season. We're also swimming in inventory, have a relatively small space in which to work and admittedly, do a fair share of tripping over each other and boxes on a daily basis. When one's actual workspace (computer, mouse and chair) becomes the size of a shoebox, it's time to do some organizing!

It's a big job and we're still not done. But I don't mind. Not one bit. Which brings me to the point of my post.

I love vintage. It doesn't matter what it is. Although we primarily sell clothing, jewelry and handbags, I am just as passionate about vintage pottery, art, linens, furniture...well the list goes on and on.

What I've been finding as we sort through our wares, is an incredible feeling of pride and joy. I stand in awe of the craftsmanship of days gone by. I hold a vintage hat and am so taken by it's form, beauty and creativeness. I hang a vintage dress and think of where it was made, where it's been, and how thrilled I am to have had the opportunity to rescue it from a landfill. The stories that an old necklace or bangle bracelet could tell me, just boggles my mind. I feel surrounded by history, beauty, creative passion and quality that is unmatched by any new items circulating today.

As I face a new day filled with much left to do to free up space here at The Dusty Dog, I am truly happy. I swear I can hear the history speaking to me as I work. It's a beautiful thing.
